If you have no expectations, you'll let yourself write all kinds of stupid until one day, something comes out that surprises and delights you and you'll have no idea where it came from. The goal is to teach yourself to get your everyday (executive or editor's) brain out of the way so that your creative side can be freed. You write as much as you can during that time. I find that limiting it to a short time helps with the exercise, say 2 minutes or 5 minutes because you don't have time to think. Some people will use a random word as stimulus. Some people like to free write by listing to music to set the mood or reading a snippet of something beforehand. Hi Christine! Free writing is where you write without any plan or forethought.
